Around 1 in 10 people have experienced some form of panic attack. If you’ve experienced one you will know just how frightening and uncomfortable they can be. The main feeling is a rush of intense fear and anxiety. Physical symptoms can include:
- Palpitations (an awareness of your heart beating faster)
- Trembling or shaking
The frequency of panic attacks can range from occasional to daily depending on the severity of the condition. Usually certain situations will trigger an attack although occasionally attacks may be more upredictable.
Fortunately help is at hand. The first thing you need to do is speak to your GP. If you are suffering from the symptoms above it is important that your GP eliminates any underlying medical conditions. Once you have done this self-hypnosis is a great place to start.
The good news is that no one has ever died from a panic attack. They are extremely unpleasant but they will not have an adverse effect on your health. The symptoms you experience are caused by a surge of adrenaline. Your body creates this adrenaline as a result of fear, the “ fight or flight” response caused by part of the nervous system known as the sympathetic nervous system.
This “fight or flight” response is a useful and necessary response to danger. If you come face to face with a lion, you will get a huge surge of adrenaline so you can think on your feet and run as fast as you can. Great! That might just might save your life. However during a panic attack the body triggers the surge of adrenaline in situations that are not warranted. The result is the host of unpleasant symptoms that you feel.
