It works in much the same way as nail biting or skin picking in that the habit is fed by a strange sense of satisfaction which you get from pulling the hair itself. When hair is pulled the happy chemical “dopamine” is released and a brief sense of calm follows. Unfortunately this is then followed by feelings of failure and regret which then start the cycle again. Many people try to stop with willpower alone but few succeed. That’s because hair pulling is an unconscious (automatic) habit which rarely responds to conscious thought alone.
